In 2013, while serving as Florida's Attorney General, Pam Bondi's office received over 20 complaints from former students alleging fraud by Trump University. Eric Schneiderman, who at that time was the New York Attorney General had initiated a lawsuit against the now defunct Trump University for its deceptive practices. The political action committee set up for Bondi's re-election would receive $25,000 from the Donald J. Trump foundation; subsequently, Bondi declines to join the lawsuit against Trump University.
The donation first gained scrutiny after the nonprofit watchdog organization Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) filed a complaint with the Internal Revenue Service, in regard to the 2013 Trump foundation donation to Bondi's PAC. Suspiciously, the Trump foundation claimed that the donation was a mistake. This isn't the first time a Trump nominee has responded to criticisms of wrongdoings by passing it off as a "mistake", in fact, Trump's pick for Secretary of Education, Linda Mcmahon, who wrongfully claimed to have earned a degree in education also chalked it up as a simple "mistake".
